Second-year Hawks big man Asa Newell will be reevaluated in about two weeks after suffering a left great toe hyperextension during Wednesday’s win in Washington, the team announced today (via Twitter).
Being checked out again in two weeks doesn’t mean Newell will be ready to return at that point. In fact, it seems more likely than not that his recovery timeline will extend beyond that date, as today’s press release says another update “will be provided at that time.”
The Hawks play seven times over the next two weeks, including a home game against Charlotte on November 20. That could be his reevaluation date.
Newell, whose third-year option was exercised by Atlanta on Sunday, had been playing rotation minutes in recent games amid frontcourt injuries to Jalen Johnson (left ankle sprain), Jock Landale (left hip strain), Mouhamed Gueye (left foot fracture) and Henri Veesaar (right ACL tear).
All-Star forward Johnson was initially questionable for Friday’s rematch against the Wizards but has been downgraded to out and will miss his third straight game, tweets Brad Rowland of Locked on Hawks. Friday also marks the third consecutive absence for Landale, while Gueye and Veesaar are recovering from long-term injuries.
The 23rd overall pick in the 2025 draft, Newell has averaged 3.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 11.0 minutes per game across five appearances this season.
The Hawks also announced that guard Keshon Gilbert, who’s on a two-way contract, underwent a non-surgical procedure on Thursday to address inflammation in his left knee. The former UNLV and Iowa State standout will be reevaluated in approximately six weeks, per the team.
