After initially reporting that the two sides were nearing an agreement, the Italian outlet Superbasket says free agent big man Kelly Olynyk is on track to join BC Roma, with a deal expected to be officially finalized soon.
Olynyk, 35, entered the NBA as the 13th overall pick in the 2013 draft and has made 842 regular season appearances for eight teams over the past 13 seasons. The Canadian forward/center, known for his floor-spacing ability, holds career averages of 9.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 21.8 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .486/.369/.794.
After averaging at least 19 minutes per night in each of his first 12 years in the NBA, Olynyk played a modest role off the bench for San Antonio last season, playing just 8.6 MPG in 42 regular season outings, then logging 35 total minutes in nine playoff games.
The veteran free agent was linked to the Warriors and Spurs this summer and traveled to Paris to take part in a mini-camp with several Spurs players. However, Golden State addressed its need for a frontcourt floor-spacer by signing Georges Niang, and San Antonio would cross the luxury tax line if it adds a 15th man on a minimum-salary contract.
BC Roma is a newly established club based in Rome that was co-founded by former Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson and Lakers guard Luka Doncic and will compete in Italy’s top domestic league (LBA) and the EuroCup this season. The team’s roster features a handful of players with some NBA experience, including Nico Mannion, Marko Simonovic, and Trentyn Flowers.
