Lloyd Harris arrived in Chengdu aiming for a breakthrough.

Harris banged out one of his biggest wins of the year today.

Qualifier Harris hammered 16 aces toppling top-seeded Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 7-6(5) to charge into the Chengdu Open quarterfinals.

Harris served 78 percent, won 40 of 45 first-serve points and did not face a break point scoring his first Top 20 victory since he defeated No. 19 Lorenzo Musetti in the 2023 Australian Open first round.

It’s the 11th Tour-level quarterfinal for Harris, including his first ATP quarterfinal since the 2023 Mallorca on grass.

World No. 136 Harris has been beset by injuries in recent years. Harris underwent wrist surgery in the spring of 2022 then had back surgery in the fall of 2024.

Next up for Harris is a quarterfinal clash with Hubert Hurkacz in a battle of big servers.

Earlier, Hurkacz pumped 13 aces rallying past American left-hander Martin Damm 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The fifth-seeded Hurkacz withstood 18 aces from Damm, avenging his loss to the 22-year-old American in Montpellier earlier this season.

The 29-year-old Hurkacz reached a Tour-level quarterfinal for the eighth consecutive season.

Hurkacz battled into his 43rd tour-level quarter-final (21-21) and first since reaching the Geneva final
last year.

No. 2-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina swept Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-4, 6-4. Davidovich Fokina will face French qualifier Alexandre Muller for a semifinal spot.
