The Knicks are getting ready for a heated training battle, as John Konchar, Bruce Brown, and Ochai Agbaji have a training camp wing competition, while Drew Eubanks and James Wiseman will lock horns on the big man front.

Despite having two roster spots open, the expectation is that the Knicks will only fill one, Marc Stein writes in a recent edition of The Stein Line (subscriber link). However, that calculus could change should they opt to make a move to shed another guaranteed deal.

Stein also notes that Wiseman and head coach Mike Brown have history together, as Brown was the assistant coach in Golden State when Wiseman was drafted, and that Brown is a fan of the 6’11” big man, who would fill a position of need as the third center.

Wiseman has bounced around and struggled with injuries over the last few years, playing just five games in the last two seasons combined. He played 63 games for the Pistons in 2023/24 in his last full season, averaging 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game.

• Stein reports that veteran guard Gabe Vincent could have signed a training camp deal with the Knicks similar to the one signed by Konchar and Brown, but chose instead to wait for a clearer, more certain opportunity. Vincent split last season between the Lakers and Hawks, averaging 4.4 points on .392/.338/.836 shooting splits.
• It was previously reported that Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors are in advanced discussions on a contract extension. The highest such a deal could go would be a two-year extension worth over $125MM. Stein reports that the Clippers were not willing to offer the star wing an extension, which is what ultimately led to the trade with Toronto.
• The Mavericks have been looking for a new head of their medical team since firing Johan Bilsborough after last season, and they may have found their target. Stein reports that Canadian former soccer player Nico Berg is expected to win the position, despite his lone NBA experience being a consulting gig with the Wolves over a decade ago. He has gone on to be a consultant for teams in the NFL, NHL, and Premier League, and he previously worked with Alex McKechnie, the vice president of Player Health and Performance for the Raptors, giving him a direct connection to Mavs president Masai Ujiri.
