Packers sign Scott Daly to practice squad as long snapper insurance

Wednesday has brought news of another turn in the Green Bay Packers’ long snapping situation. The Packers, who are heading into the regular season with Matt Orzech as the one long snapper on the 53-man roster, have added another player at the position to ensure that they have some cover if Orzech is not ready for week one.

That player is Scott Daly, a five-year NFL veteran. Matt Schneidman has the report of Daly’s signing to the practice squad, which gives the team 16 players on that unit. Because kicker Lenny Krieg qualifies for the international roster exemption, that means the Packers have one more open slot on the practice squad.

Daly’s addition gives the Packers a veteran with plenty of NFL experience — and NFC North experience in particular — if something prevents Orzech from suiting up on Sundays. He was the Detroit Lions’ long snapper from 2021 to 2023 before a knee injury knocked him out for the remainder of that campaign. He then ended up with the Chicago Bears, who employed him as their long snapper for the last two years, before spending the 2026 offseason with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who released him at final cuts on Sunday in favor of incumbent Evan Deckers.

While Orzech spent the entirety of training camp on the PUP list, Cal Adomitis took every long snap in practices and games for the Packers. His efforts helped Trey Smack execute a perfect preseason, going 9-for-9 on field goals and 7-for-7 on PATs. Orzech was cleared to return to action on Sunday, the NFL’s final cutdown day, however, ensuring him a place on the 53-man roster.

Notably, Adomitis has not yet signed with another team’s practice squad, meaning he would have been eligible to re-sign to Green Bay. However, it appears that the Packers preferred Daly, whose track record is slightly longer than that of Adomitis, to be their insurance policy. It is at least possible that his experience playing at Lambeau Field and Soldier Field over the last five years could play into the decision. Daly was the Bears’ snapper in 2024 when Karl Brooks blocked a last-second field goal attempt to ensure a 20-19 Packers victory at Soldier Field, but he also helped Bears kicker Cairo Santos hit all 8 field goal attempts in the three games between the two teams in the 2025 season.
