Acknowledging that the reported terms of Gary Trent Jr.‘s four-year, $64MM deal with the Bucks have “raised eyebrows” around the NBA, ESPN’s Shams Charania said this week during an appearance on the Shump Street with Iman Shumpert podcast (YouTube link) that another team was “poking around” a possible sign-and-trade for Trent at “around the same number.”
While it’s possible that’s true, Charania’s report is missing some important context. For instance, Milwaukee’s deal with Trent is expected to be fully guaranteed — would the veteran wing’s other suitor have been willing to guarantee four years for a player coming off one of the worst years of his career? Additionally, a team interested in acquiring Trent via sign-and-trade may have been looking to move off another unwanted contract in the process.
Here’s more on the Bucks:
- Speaking this week to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, new Bucks guard Tyler Herro said he wants to “move on” from the trade that sent him out of Miami and the physical altercation he got into with former Heat teammate Bam Adebayo in Las Vegas. “Honestly, I’m just trying to move past all of it,” Herro told ESPN. “I’m focused on Milwaukee and building something special. They obviously just traded the greatest player in their history, so we want to come in and help continue what they’ve been doing.” According to Shelburne, Herro added that he’s looking forward to representing his hometown team and suggested that if he had to play with any team besides the Heat, the Bucks would’ve been his choice.
- Shelburne provided some additional details on that altercation between Adebayo and Herro, citing sources who said the Bucks guard didn’t get knocked to the ground by Adebayo’s blow and had to be “restrained by others in the gym from responding physically.” Heat sources told ESPN that Adebayo and Herro had a good relationship during their time in Miami but grew apart over the past year.
- After spending six of the past seven seasons with the Bucks, Thanasis Antetokounmpo won’t return to the team for 2026/27. As Emmett Prosser of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes, Antetokounmpo bid farewell to the Bucks and the local fans in a clip from his “Thanalysis” podcast (Twitter video link). “I am grateful for everything from the bottom of my heart,” he said, addressing the city of Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin. “Everything you gave to my family.”
- In case you missed it, the Bucks are said to be among the teams with sign-and-trade interest in Peyton Watson.
