The Pittsburgh Steelers have their starting quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, entrenched for the 2026 NFL season, but the battle to be his successor is heating up.
The Steelers have given Will Howard and Drew Allar plenty of playing time in the preseason as the two recent draft picks have jockeyed for positioning on the Steelers’ depth chart behind Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.

Thus far, both quarterbacks have had their moments. Howard has been efficient, completing 17 of 24 passes (70.8%) for 160 yards, but has also tossed two interceptions and no touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Allar’s accuracy has been spottier, as he has completed 21 of 36 passes (58.3%). However, he has racked up 263 yards and two touchdowns while showing off impressive downfield playmaking skills. That could potentially help the 2026 third-round pick leapfrog Howard on the Steelers’ depth chart for the third-string quarterback job.
But before that is decided, both Howard and Allar will get one more chance to prove themselves against the Buffalo Bills. Each figures to get extensive playing time in the preseason finale as the Steelers assess whether to keep both of the young quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.
As for the Bills, they rested their starters in preseason Week 2 but could opt to give Josh Allen and Co. some as they host the Steelers at new Highmark Stadium.
