Trevon Diggs among 8 Detroit Lions free agent tryouts

The Detroit Lions tried out eight different players, according to Sunday’s NFL transaction list, including former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. The following players were in Allen Park to try out:

LB Amen Agbongbemiga (Lions signed him)

Plummer and Haener reportedly impressed during their workouts, but the Lions opted to sign veteran Josh Dobbs to fill the hole left by Teddy Bridgewater‘s sudden retirement. Dobbs’ signing, as of Sunday evening, was still not yet official, but he’s agreed upon a one-year, $1.425 million deal, with $475,000 guaranteed, per reports.

Hick and McCloud’s workout comes off the heels of veteran Cedrick Wilson Jr. missing Sunday’s practice. As of right now, Wilson’s absence is not yet explained, but the working out of two receivers could be a sign Detroit will need some reinforcements at the position. Hicks (6-foot-2, 201) went undrafted in 2024 and has yet to make an NFL appearance, while McCloud (5-foot-9, 190) is an eight-year veteran who last significant contributed in 2024, when he started 13 games for the Falcons and put up 686 yards.

Burney and Eifler tried out, but it appears the Lions opted to go with Agbongbemiga, instead. We previously wrote a story about the signing of the special teams-heavy linebacker here.

But the big name here is Diggs. The 27-year-old cornerback was an immediate hit with the Dallas Cowboys as a second-round pick. In his second season (2021), Diggs led the NFL in interceptions (11), was named to the Pro Bowl, and received First Team All-Pro honors. After a decent follow-up season (three interceptions, 14 passes defended, another Pro Bowl), it’s been a bit of a struggle for Diggs. He suffered a torn ACL two games into his 2023 season, didn’t quite look the same in a shortened 2024 season, and ended up being cut midseason last year. He lasted two games when the Packers picked him up, and he’s been a free agent since.

Detroit has a need for some cornerback depth after waiving Terrion Arnold this offseason, but it remains to be seen whether they will actually sign Diggs or not.
