Two members of the Oklahoma City Thunder starting lineup will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Jalen Williams will be out long-term with a fractured fibula and a dislocated ankle, and Cason Wallace has a torn labrum in his left shoulder, general manager Sam Presti announced on Monday.
Both will require surgery for their injuries, and timelines will then be provided, Presti added.
Williams was injured on a drive with 1:14 remaining against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday night. He was tended to almost immediately by medical personnel after going down underneath the basket on the Thunder’s offensive end.
Williams’ ankle was draped by towels, and players from both teams reacted with dismay and disbelief as a stretcher was brought out. The game was stopped for about five minutes, and the Thunder went on to finish a 108-101 victory.
“Just feel bad for him,” Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said in a post-game televised interview about Williams, fighting back tears as he spoke. “Nothing more than that.”
Williams saluted the crowd with two thumbs up as he was wheeled off the court.
Injuries have hampered the 25-year-old’s career since the Thunder won the 2025 NBA Championship. He missed 49 games last season and most of the playoffs with hamstring issues and a recovery from a significant surgery on his wrist from the previous off-season.
“He’s as tough as they come,” Presti said. “Just an elite competitor.”
Williams was averaging 13.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists through the first three games of the year. In his last healthy season in 2024-25, he averaged 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.6 steals to earn an all-star nod, make the all-NBA third team and all-defensive second team.
Wallace also suffered his injury in Sunday’s win when he attempted to go through a screen in the first quarter.
He signed a five-year, $139 million rookie scale contract extension prior to the season starting. Wallace has averaged 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists through three games.
