Steelers work out bevy of players Week 2 of training camp

The Steelers worked out six players over Thursday and Friday, PennLive’s Nick Farabaugh reported.

Only one of those players, safety Israel Mukuamu, has been signed by the team so far.

The other names to come to Pittsburgh were edges Xavier Thomas and Andre Carter II, safety Donovan Wilson, and wide receivers Cornell Powell and Isaiah Winstead.

Thomas, Wilson and Powell are the most recognizable names.

Thomas was a fifth-round pick in 2024 by the Arizona Cardinals out of Clemson. He scored a 6.79 RAS pre-draft as a sixth-year senior with 17.5 career college sacks, but never more than 3.5 in a season. He hasn’t recorded a tackle in an NFL regular season game since his 2.5-sack rookie campaign with Arizona.

Wilson, like Mukuamu, is a former Cowboys safety, being drafted in the sixth round of 2019 by Dallas. He spent most of his NFL career being coached by Mike McCarthy. The 6’0, 204-pound defender is primarily a strong safety, with his best year coming in 2022: 101 tackles, five sacks, one interception and two passes defensed. The now-31-year-old started 15 games for the Cowboys in 2025.

Powell is another Clemson product. He recorded 882 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his final collegiate season before going in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to the Kansas City Chiefs. He scored a 7.59 RAS pre-draft, running a 4.53-second 40-yard dash. Powell has appeared in just three NFL games, mostly on special teams, with no career catches. He had a brief stint on the Steelers’ practice squad in 2025.

The Steelers will finish Week 2 of training camp under the lights in an evening practice Aug. 8.
