Seth McGowan drawing praise from Colts’ offensive stars in training camp

There are a lot of former Wildcats having success in the NFL. Right now, it looks like Seth McGowan is making a huge impression in the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp.

McGowan was a seventh-round pick this past April, and he’s already making a heavy push to be the No. 2 running back behind Jonathan Taylor. Here is what the Colts’ offensive stars have to say about McGowan.

“I think he’s done a good job,” Colts quarterback Daniel Jones recently said. “He’s a – you can tell, a strong, physical runner and not afraid to get his pads down and run through the line. So, he’s done a good job, has run hard, and I’m excited to see him play when we get in live action.”

Jones is coming off a 2025 season where he tore his Achilles in Week 14, but he completed 68 percent of his passes for over 3,000 yards through the Colts’ first 12+ games.

“Everybody thinks he’s just like a big power back, but Seth has some moves,” running back Jonathan Taylor explained. “If you look at his feet, he reminds me of like a David Montgomery. … He’s not just a power back. He has great feet, great vision. I’m like, Seth has great feet. It’s going to be interesting when we’re in full live (games) and not just practice situations like how he could put his skills on display.”

Taylor rushed for nearly 1,600 yards in 2025, and he has back-to-back seasons with 300+ carries. That’s a heavy workload, so having McGowan could be a much-needed welcome for Taylor to share some of the carries with this season.

“He’s had a nice start,” offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said about McGowan. “He’s put in a bunch of work learning the offense. He’s still sort of working on learning every detail of everything, and he’s had a couple young-guy hiccups along the way, but that’s often to be expected for a rookie.

“He’s doing a really nice job of when he gets carries, sort of reading those runs and putting them where they generally should be. He’s where he needs to be in the pass game. … He works really hard and, shoot, if he keeps working at this rate, the future’s bright for him.”

Jim Bob Cooter has been the Colts’ offensive coordinator since 2023.

McGowan rushed for 725 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2025 in his only season with the Wildcats.
