What’s next for the Wizards after an eventful few weeks that saw them draft AJ Dybantsa, sign Trae Young to the largest free agent contract of 2026, and trade for Deandre Ayton and Khris Middleton? According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Washington is hoping to add a backup point guard to round out its roster, which currently features 14 players on standard contracts.

While the free agent pool has shrunk since June 30, there are still a handful of interesting names available on the open market, including Brandon Williams, Gabe Vincent, Cameron Payne, Aaron Holiday, and Cole Anthony. Washington was also reported last month to have some interest in Russell Westbrook, though NBA insider Jake Fischer, who published that initial report, suggested during his latest live stream for Bleacher Report that he’s not counting on Westbrook returning to D.C.

Besides adding a point guard, the Wizards also intend to engage in contract extension talks with Anthony Davis when he becomes eligible for a new deal on August 6, says Scotto.

• Multiple teams have called the Nuggets to ask about forward Cameron Johnson, but Denver has been rebuffing those inquiries, Scotto reports. Johnson was widely viewed as a trade candidate entering the offseason due to the Nuggets’ salary cap crunch, but reporting in early July suggested Denver’s front office wasn’t engaging in discussions about him, and it sounds like that hasn’t changed.
• Before the Thunder traded Luguentz Dort to the Hawks, the other teams with interest in the defensive standout included the Lakers, Heat, Raptors, and Nets, league sources tell Scotto. While Dort is eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer, Atlanta would like to keep him beyond the 2026/27 season, Scotto adds.
• Echoing previous reporting from John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 (Twitter link), Scotto says the Suns hope to sign Miles Bridges to a contract extension after acquiring him from Charlotte. Bridges, who is on an expiring contract, became eligible last week for an extension worth a maximum of $86.3MM over three years.
