The worst case scenario for the Seattle Seahawks occurred on the first drive of the NFL Kickoff game Wednesday night when quarterback Sam Darnold exited the game with a hip injury, but it might not be as severe as originally expected.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Darnold underwent a CT scan on his hip that produced “encouraging but inconclusive” results. Seattle’s veteran signal caller will undergo an MRI on Thursday which should help provide a recovery timeline.
To further improve matters, head coach Mike Macdonald added in his postgame press conference Darnold avoided a fracture, likely season-altering news considering the average recovery ranges from six months to a year which would’ve put the defending champions in a difficult position moving forward.
Even with their starter sidelined, the Seahawks still have a proven backup in Drew Lock, who led Seattle to a 13-10 comeback win over the New England Patriots, should Darnold be sidelined moving forward.
His status for next week’s road game against the Arizona Cardinals is unknown, but the MRI results and capacity he practices in next week should provide a clear indication.
