Undrafted big man Robbie Avila, who reportedly agreed to a training camp contract with the Lakers, is pondering a potential return to college, basketball insider Adam Zagoria tweets.

Avila, who appeared in two Summer League games with the Lakers, could be among several pro athletes from the Class of ’22 who might seek a fifth year of college eligibility due to a court ruling in Colorado this week. The decision makes those athletes eligible for the 2026/27 season and opens a special transfer portal window from Aug. 3-10.

A federal court dealt a blow to the NCAA’s new eligibility rule Friday when it ruled that all high school class of 2022 athletes who exhausted their fourth season of college eligibility this spring are eligible for a fifth season in 2026/27, according to the Associated Press.

The ruling from U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Denver is expected to be appealed. The NCAA plans to have a “five-for-five” rule, beginning with athletes who enroll in college in fall 2027. Under that plan, athletes in all sports will be given five years of eligibility over five seasons once their college eligibility clock begins.

Avila, a 6’10” center, was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year last season after leading Saint Louis to a 27-4 record. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 35 games to earn the award. Before transferring to Saint Louis in 2024, Avila gained fame at Indiana State for his low-post moves, his passing skills and his unique look that includes glasses with thick frames.
