A German grocery store chain is expanding its local footprint with a new outpost in Hanover County.
Aldi is planning to open a 20,000-square-foot store at 10310 Washington Highway.
It’s rising as part of the new Stony Run Commons shopping center, which is largely still under construction south of Ashland and near the Henrico-Hanover line.
The Aldi would follow the opening of a 7-Eleven at the Stony Run center. A Hyatt Studios hotel, Take 5 Oil Change, Bank of America branch and office for financial planner Stein Investment Group are also anticipated to open at the development, according to a leasing flyer.
Aldi’s anticipated opening date was unavailable. The company didn’t respond to a request for comment on Monday.
The store was well underway on construction this week.

South Carolina-based Twin Rivers Capital is developing the Stony Run project, and announced its acquisition of the 22-acre project site in 2024. It wasn’t clear from county property records what Twin Rivers paid for the overall site. Since then, Twin Rivers has sold off at least five of the 11 development parcels at the center in deals totaling $15.1 million, including parcels where a Panda Express and Advance Auto Parts are under construction, according to online land records.
Aldi lists 14 stores in the Richmond region on its website, including the upcoming location on Washington Highway.
Earlier this year, the company announced plans to open more than 180 new stores across 31 states by the end of 2026, which is the 50th year the German grocery chain has operated in the United States. The planned increase to Aldi’s store count would give the chain nearly 2,800 U.S. stores by the end of the year, per a company news release.
Other grocery store chains are also making moves in the region. Kroger opened a new Mechanicsville store earlier this month, and Publix is planning to open a new location near Brandermill in Chesterfield.
