The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Fernando Mendoza with the number one overall pick in April. He is the future of the franchise and expected to take the reins at some point during the 2026 season.
One of Mendoza’s traits that attracted the Raiders is his work ethic. The former Heisman Trophy Winner is known to be meticulous with his approach to playing quarterback. He uses it to make himself better every day, and it shows on the field, with him rarely making the same mistakes.

It is an aspect of his game that caught new quarterback coach Mike Sullivan’s eye. During his press conference on Saturday, he spoke about Mendoza’s unique approach and work ethic.
“Well, he’s a very diligent, tireless worker. Everything that has been said, that’s been portrayed,
as far as the type of young man he is, is true. He’ssomeone who really loves the process. One of the things
that he did was, we had discussions about the OTAs about every single passthat he threw and to evaluate
and write up every pass play and what the progression was, the footwork and then his own critique of
where he fell short or where he felt he did good. Just to go through that process, very voluminous, old
school.”
Mendoza got a shot with the ones on Saturday and made most of it by executing the offense and impressing the coaching staff. If he can continue on this path, the assumption of Kirk Cousins being the starter in Week 1 could change.
