Pacific Notes: Acuff, Pedulla, Suns, Brea, Huntley, Castro
Darius Acuff Jr. has shot just 32.9% from the field and 14.8% on three-pointers in his first three NBA games, but the rookie guard has still managed to average 22.3 points per game, including a 33-point showing in the Kings’ home opener on Friday.
As Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic tweets, Acuff has been able to put up a solid scoring average in large part because he has already taken 73 total shots (24.3 per night). Those 73 field goal attempts are the most that any rookie has attempted through his first three games since the start of the 1975/76 season, Vorkunov details, easily topping the 64 that Kevin Durant took for the SuperSonics back in 2007.
While Acuff may not average 24 shots per game all year, his numbers so far reflect the fact that the rebuilding Kings are fully committed to having him play a starring role in their offense in his first NBA season. Besides leading the team in shot attempts, the 19-year-old also ranks first among Kings players in usage rate (34.0%) and second in minutes per game (36.0) so far.
We have more from around the Pacific:
- Having reported to the Stockton Kings for training camp, point guard Sean Pedulla spoke to Brenden Nunes of Sactown Sports 1140 (Twitter video link) about why he thinks his new two-way deal with Sacramento makes sense for both him and the team, what he can bring to the organization, and the areas he’s looking to build upon after being named the G League’s Rookie of the Year last season.
- After an embarrassing blowout loss to Portland to start the season, the Suns evened their record at 1-1 with a victory over Golden State on Saturday. Still, many of the same flaws the club showed in its season opener carried over to its win against a depleted Warriors squad, per Doug Haller of The Athletic and Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic, who both point out that rebounding continues to be an issue for Phoenix. After ranking 29th in the NBA in defensive rebounds per game last season, the Suns – missing big men Mark Williams and Oso Ighodaro – have struggled to control the glass in the early going this fall. Entering Monday’s game vs. Oklahoma City, Phoenix ranked 29th in offensive rebounding rate and 30th in defensive rebounding rate.
- Although Koby Brea and CJ Huntley were recently waived from two-way contracts by the Suns, both players are included on the training camp roster put out by Phoenix’s G League affiliate, the Valley Suns, as Gerald Bourguet of PHNX Sports notes (Twitter links).
- Conversely, undrafted rookie big man Rafael Castro, who was in camp with the Lakers, isn’t on the Coachella Valley Lakers’ camp roster, tweets Benjamin Royer of The Orange County Register.
