LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Students at Nevada Rise Academy put on a fashion show to help their school.

An after-school modeling club at Nevada Rise Academy presented a full fashion show called “Once Upon a Runway” inside its new campus on East Owens. Students from grades first through fifth learned basics from walking to posing before putting it to the test on the runway.

They dressed up as characters inspired by Disney stories.

The after-school modeling club started last year and grew into a full production. Parents say the program helps kids carry themselves differently and sparks new interests in acting and the arts.

Mercedes Jones, a second grade ELA instructor and modeling coach at Nevada Rise Academy, said she started the club because modeling helped her as a child.

“This is important because this is what helped boost my self-confidence and self-esteem,” Jones said. “When I was younger, my mom saw that I was struggling. She put me in runway modeling. And this was something that really helped me blossom. And I want to give that to other students.”

School leaders say they are already working with community partners to make next year’s show even bigger.
