Lakers Notes: Luka, Williams, Grimes, Kushner, Iger, Lovering
After missing Wednesday’s game due to back tightness, Lakers star Luka Doncic isn’t on the injury report for Friday’s matchup with Golden State and will be available, as ESPN’s Dave McMenamin relays (via Twitter).
Starting forward Ziaire Williams, who also sat out on Wednesday, was originally considered questionable to play, with a designation of left foot injury management. However, he has since been downgraded to out, per Khobi Price of The California Post (Twitter link).
Williams was one of Los Angeles’ many free agent additions over the summer, having signed a one-year, minimum-salary contract. The former 10th overall pick will be an unrestricted free agent again in 2027.
Here’s more on the Lakers:
- Many people around the league assumed Quentin Grimes would be a full-time starter in 2026/27 after signing a four-year, $60MM contract with the Lakers in the offseason, writes Benjamin Royer of The Southern California News Group. Instead, he’s primarily come off the bench. That changed Wednesday with Doncic out, and Grimes responded with his best game of the season, putting up 23 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds in 38 minutes during the win over the Clippers. “Every game is going to have a different scheme, different game plan, different flow,” Grimes told Royer. “But our role doesn’t change, if you stick with that, knowing who you are as a player, trusting your instinct, trusting the game plan, … I stick true to myself and know what I do best.”
- Incoming owners Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are shopping minority stakes in the Lakers in the range of $250-300MM each, league sources Ben Horney of Front Office Sports. Horney clarifies that there are expected to be minority shareholders who make far more significant financial investments in the Lakers, reporting that the $250-300MM range is considered a starting point. It’s not unusual for new ownership groups to work to sell minority shares after reaching an agreement to purchase a team — the Bill Chisholm-led group recently did the same with the Celtics, Horney notes.
- Lawson Lovering’s new two-way contract with the Lakers covers two seasons, Keith Smith of Spotrac tweets, meaning it will run through the 2027/28 season if the big man isn’t promoted or waived before then. The 23-year-old big man spent nearly all of last season — his rookie campaign — in the G League other than a brief 10-day agreement with the Grizzlies in February.
