Just how well will Cowboys rookie Caleb Downs play in 2026?

After about a week into the Dallas Cowboys 2026 training camp we have learned a little more about the team. More specifically, we’ve learned some of how new defensive coordinator Christian Parker plans to use rookie safety Caleb Downs. The answer is apparently everywhere.

That may be a stretch, but so far we have seen Downs used deep, in the box, and as the nickel corner. And according to everybody you talk to, none of it seems too big for him. His football IQ and instincts are elite level.

So that got us wondering – just how good will his 2026 season be? Are our expectations too high? Or should we recognize talent when we see it and say so? So before any preseason games, before any regular-season games, before a hopefully deep playoff run, let’s lay down a marker using end of the year awards.

Where do you think Downs will place in voting for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award? Safeties, along with defensive tackles, usually don’t see a lot of support in these things over pass-rushing ends and linebackers, or corners who get the interception stats.

But Downs’ incredible football ability, combined with the uniqueness of playing all over the field, might just be the secret sauce to being in the running.
