Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed on Monday that Iran attempted to assassinate his son.

In a phone interview with Israel’s Channel 14, Netanyahu said, “Something incredible happened: Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to kill one of my sons.”

He did not provide any details on how the alleged assassination was attempted, or when the attempt was made.

It was also not clear which of Netanyahu’s sons, Avner or Yair, was targeted in the supposed attempt. 

The Israeli Prime Minister’s claims came during discussions about reports that domestic security agency Shin Bet had refused to provide a detail for Gadi Eisenkot, who will be contesting the upcoming elections against Netanyahu.

“Therefore, the security they (Netanyahu’s family) get is not a luxury,” he added, in an apparent response regarding an agreement reached with Shin Bet to provide his wife and his sons with security for at least five years, even if he loses the elections.

Netanyahu has two sons and a daughter. His elder son, Yair, has spent a long time in Miami since 2024. Reports suggest that he was under Shin Bet protection during this time. Avner, his younger son, has lived most of his life in Israel.

“Without it (protection), they could succeed [in killing my son.] People need to show some restraint, especially during an election campaign,” the Israeli leader, who launched a war against Iran alongside the US on February 28, said.

Yair’s stay in the US under security has attracted controversy over the use of taxpayers’ money, while some residents in south Florida a target for attacks by enemies of Israel.

“I spoke with the Shin Bet chief and asked him to provide appropriate security to any prime ministerial candidate,” Netanyahu said on the controversy regarding the agency refusing to provide security to Eisenkot.
