As the NFL tries to get more people from other countries to become passionate about American football, one English athlete got the bug many years ago.
England striker Harry Kane, now 32, has been a fan of the NFL for a long time.

“It was mainly the NFL that I got into at quite a young age,” Kane said recently, via Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic. “And mainly because of Tom Brady. My love for that started from him.”
It began, as Pitt-Brooke explains it, in 2011. Kane saw The Brady 6 documentary at a time when he could relate to the manner in which Brady was initially overlooked by the NFL.
“Seeing the way he went about his business, his journey from the start — when people didn’t expect much from him — to go on and be the greatest ever player in his sport is maybe reminiscent of me earlier in my career,” Kane said. “Having people doubt me and working hard enough to turn that around.”
As a result, Kane has been looking forward to England’s next match, which will happen today at Gillette Stadium, Brady’s long-time home venue.

“That is probably the one I am excited to go to,” Kane said last week. “That one will be pretty cool.”
Kane also has a lingering desire to try his hand in the NFL, as a kicker. And Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey isn’t writing off the possibility of Kane pulling it off, if/when he decides to give it a try.
“It’s definitely possible,” Aubrey said, via Pitt-Brooke. “It’s just there’s only 32 jobs. So even if you have the ability, it’s trying to get somebody to give you an opportunity. That’s what took me the longest. . . .
“If you strike a soccer ball a million times, it’s going to translate to striking a football. You have got to figure out where to hit the football and how to shape your foot. The mental aspect of taking a set piece or a penalty is very similar to taking a field goal.”

For now, Kane is focused on soccer. After getting a taste of multiple NFL venues (AT&T Stadium last week, Gillette Stadium today, and MetLife Stadium on Saturday), maybe he’ll decide to seek out one of the rare opportunities available to those who can kick a ball with power and accuracy.
