The NBA has lost one of its most successful coaches.

Don Nelson, the second-winningest coach in NBA history, has died at age 86, the Golden State Warriors announced Sunday.

Nelson went 1,335-1,063 as a coach for 31 seasons with the Warriors (twice), Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks.

Gregg Popovich overtook Nelson for the record in 2022.

Nelson won the NBA’s Coach of the Year award three times, but never won a league championship.

“It’s a sad day for basketball with the passing of Don Nelson,” Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic posted on X. “I have so much respect for him and everything he did for the game, especially the way he believed in international players. I’m grateful for the time I spent with him.”

Nelson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
