The San Francisco 49ers have begun training camp, but don’t have two players they’ll rely on heavily throughout the season, as George Kittle and Mykel Williams are currently on the Active/PUP List. The good news is that if Kittle or Williams rehab goes well enough, they can be activated at any time and return to practice.

Williams is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 9, on November 2, 2025. Kittle’s coming back from an Achilles injury he sustained in the playoffs in January 2026.
The fact that the 49ers are playing in Australia in Week 1 could complicate Kittle playing out of the gate. As for Williams, John Lynch said, “he’s making every effort to be ready for Week 1.”
There is no Active/PUP List in the regular season. If neither player has proven that they could return during the first four games, then the Niners must transition Williams and Kittle to the Reserve/PUP list, making them ineligible for the first four games.
If the 49ers feel like either has a chance of playing in Week 2 or 3, they’d have to figure out which positions to skimp at the first couple of weeks until Williams or Kittle return.
