Joao Fonseca will not bring his electric brand of tennis to the US Open this year. 

The Brazilian, who had to pull out of Cincinnati with an abdomen injury before the third round, was unable to recover in time. 

“Hi everyone. I wanted to give you all an update,” Fonseca wrote on Instagram. “After undergoing tests and starting treatment for my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to fully recover so I can compete at a high level. 

“Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to play in the US Open. It was not an easy decision to make, as it is a very special tournament for me. We’ll keep working hard so I can come back as soon as possible.”

Fonseca made his main-draw debut at the US Open last year, reaching the second round. He has had mixed results in 2026, but did make his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal on the red clay of Roland Garros, after stunning Novak Djokovic in a third-round, five-set thriller, then taking out two-time finalist Casper Ruud in the round of 16.

20-year-old Fonseca owns a 19-13 record this season.
