After receiving serious interest from BC Roma SPQR, the new Italian team co-founded by former Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson, Dwane Casey has withdrawn from the club’s head coaching search and will remain in his position as an adviser with the Pistons, reports Marc Stein of The Stein Line (Twitter link).

BC Roma SPQR, whose ownership group also includes Mavericks star Luka Doncic, will compete in Italy’s domestic league and the EuroCup in 2026/27 while bidding to join NBA Europe for ’27/28. The team was said to be pursuing Casey for its coaching job while also having expressed interest in veteran NBA coach Terry Stotts and Knicks assistant Riccardo Fois.

One recent report claimed that Casey and BC Roma SPQR had reached an agreement, but Stein says that’s not the case.

Casey, who worked with Nelson in Dallas from 2008-11, has a 494-570 (.464) overall regular season record as the head coach of the Timberwolves, Raptors, and Pistons. He earned Coach of the Year honors in 2018 during his last year in Toronto before being hired by Detroit.

After five seasons as the Pistons’ head coach, Casey transitioned to a front office role in 2023, receiving the title of senior advisor to basketball operations.
