COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) -Colorado Springs driver Donnetta Guthrie says a large pothole at the Cheyenne Meadows Shopping Center damaged her car, raising questions about who is responsible for maintaining the roadway.
Guthrie said the incident happened on April 23 as she was leaving the King Soopers in the shopping center.
Guthrie said she hit what she described as a large hole in the road while driving her low-profile Nissan 350Z. She said the impact damaged her wheel and muffler, just months after she had already paid for repairs from a separate road hazard.
“It was just like, boom… I felt like the bottom of my car fell out,” Guthrie said.
Guthrie said she contacted the city after the incident, but was told the road is privately owned. KKTV also reached out to the city and was told the roads in that area are not city-owned.
She said she then tried to find out who is responsible by contacting nearby businesses and asking about property management in the area.
“I immediately tried to find out who was responsible for this hole,” Guthrie said. “I went over to Tire World… and then I went to the bank across the street.”
Guthrie said she was told the area may be maintained by a homeowners association, possibly connected to Rocky Mountain Bank, though that has not been confirmed.
KKTV also contacted Essential Growth Properties, which said it manages a different portion of the shopping center and that the area where the potholes are located is not under its control.
Employees at a nearby tire shop said the problem has been ongoing and that drivers frequently try to avoid the holes.
“I’ve been here about three years, and this place is the same,” said Mark Vigil, a shop employee. “I see other people putting rocks in there just to help out.”
Guthrie said her concern goes beyond the damage to her car and focuses on safety for others using the roadway.
“There should be cones, there should be barriers,” she said. “Something to keep people from driving off into those holes.”
KKTV reached out to Rocky Mountain Bank for comment but has not received a response.
