A driver fleeing a traffic stop crashed in a major northwest suburban intersection sparking road closures and an ongoing investigation Monday afternoon near a popular mall and shopping district, authorities said.
The incident began just after 12 p.m. on Meacham Road over Interstate 90 in Schaumburg, not far from Woodfield Mall, Ikea and several other shopping centers.
Police said an Illinois State Police Trooper tried to stop a vehicle on the expressway for a violation but the driver “failed to stop and exited onto Meacham Road.”
The vehicle then ran a red light and “was subsequently struck by a pickup truck traveling northbound on Meacham Road,” ISP said in a release.
The driver of the pickup was uninjured, but the driver of the vehicle was taken to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.
Southbound Meacham Road was shut down following the crash and traffic was being diverted to I-90 westbound, ISP said. The village said all southbound and northbound lanes of Meacham Road were “temporarily closed” and urged drivers to use alternate routes if possible.
Schaumburg police said state police were investigating the crash and local officers were assisting with traffic flow.
