Dennis Schröder believes he’ll have a better opportunity to succeed with the Hornets than he did with the Cavaliers, relays Johnny Askounis of Eurohoops. In an interview with the German outlet Braunschweiger Zeitung, Schröder discusses Friday’s trade agreement between Charlotte and Cleveland that will send him to the 12th team of his NBA career.
“When you have two legends in your position who bring the ball up the court and play a lot of isolation, then it’s just difficult,” Schröder said, referring to trying to adapt to playing alongside Donovan Mitchell and James Harden with the Cavs.
He added that he was in “an extremely difficult role” after being acquired from Sacramento at the February trade deadline. However, he expressed satisfaction overall with his brief time in Cleveland and said it was “cool” to reach the Eastern Conference finals.
Schröder will presumably have more freedom with the Hornets, where he’s projected to serve as the primary backup to starting point guard Coby White. He said in the interview that he’s known he was on the trading block for about a month and considers Charlotte to be “a better situation for me.”
He’s also looking forward to playing for head coach Charles Lee and to serving as a mentor to the Hornets’ first-round picks, Hannes Steinbach and Christian Anderson Jr.
“For them, it’s obviously a blessing to have someone to chat with,” Schröder said, adding that he could have used that when he entered the league.
