AUGUSTA (WGME) – The state honored workers who’ve died on the job in Maine Tuesday.

Tuesday is a nationally recognized day to remember those who died on the job or as a result of their job.

A public remembrance ceremony was held Tuesday in Augusta.

The Maine Department of Labor says in 2025, 19 people in the state died because of workplace injuries or illnesses from their jobs.

Two additional Maine residents died on the job while working out of state as well.

State labor officials say they are increasingly asking workers to report close calls on the job to break them down and prevent a tragedy.

“What’s dangerous to me in an office building is different than you on the road, or these construction workers behind us, so that’s a key thing,” Peter Crockett from the Maine Labor Group on Health said.

In addition to industrial accidents, Workers’ Memorial Day commemorates deaths from chronic illnesses caused by workplace exposure.
