On Tuesday, former Cowboys quarterback and CBS broadcaster Tony Romo issued a statement announcing his no-contest plea to OWI charges and expressing his intention to return to CBS, in time.

In response, CBS has nothing to say. And all that that implies.

Via John Ourand of Puck, CBS had no comment about the Romo statement. CBS also referred to its prior statement on Romo — a perfunctory, one-line release announcing that he would be placed on leave “until further notice.”

As Ourand observes, the fact that Romo’s statement wasn’t coordinated with CBS speaks to a wedge between the two sides, along with the possibly inevitable legal wrangling over the four years and $72 million left on his contract.

And, as Ourand reiterates, “it still appears exceedingly unlikely” that Romo will ever return to CBS.

CBS has done nothing to contradict the perception that it’s moving on from Romo, after nine years on the network’s No. 1 broadcast team. J.J. Watt has been bumped up to the top spot, and by all appearances he’ll be given a full and fair chance to retain it beyond 2026.
