The Bucks have placed guard Kevin Porter Jr. on waivers, sources tell Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link).
Milwaukee had been carrying 16 players on guaranteed contracts and had to trade or waive one of those players in order to set its 15-man standard roster for the start of the regular season. While Caris LeVert and Jericho Sims had been viewed as possible odd men out, the Bucks have instead opted to cut Porter after he averaged 17.4 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game in 38 outings last season.
Although Porter has put up solid scoring and passing numbers for each of his four NBA teams, he has been inconsistent as a shooter (.348 career 3PT%) and a defender. He also wore out his welcome in Cleveland and Houston earlier in his career, as a locker-room altercation ended his time with the Cavs, while a domestic incident that resulted in his arrest led to his exit from the Rockets.
There has been no indication that any sort of inciting incident like that prompted the Bucks to move on from Porter. Milwaukee apparently determined that the 26-year-old’s expiring contract and the club’s strong backcourt depth made him expendable.
Even after parting ways with Porter, the Bucks have guards Tyler Herro, Ryan Rollins, Brayden Burries, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Gary Trent Jr. under contract, with wings A.J. Green and Caris LeVert also among the team’s backcourt options.
Before opting to waive Porter, the Bucks reportedly explored trade opportunities to address their roster crunch, including discussing a possible Sims trade with the Lakers. However, nothing came to fruition on that front, so Milwaukee will be on the hook for Porter’s $5.39MM cap hit for the upcoming season, assuming he goes unclaimed on waivers.
Porter would be eligible to sign with any NBA team as a free agent, though with regular season rosters now set, many clubs around the league won’t have the flexibility to bring him aboard.
