Few would have thought that the Cleveland Browns fans would be talking about realistic NFL playoff hopes heading into November. Instead, most thought the only focus would be on the 2027 NFL draft order, fans making other plans for the bye week and Thanksgiving, and wondering who the Browns might be trading away at the NFL trade deadline.
Instead, Week 8 versus the Pittsburgh Steelers will decide the top of the AFC North, Cleveland is linked to a number of rumored names at the deadline, and the focus on the NFL draft is tertiary, but still big given the Los Angeles Rams’ struggles.

The playoff conversation is an interesting one. The over/under betting line on FanDuel has moved quite a bit, but the Browns are still not expected to make the playoffs, with +164 odds as of this writing. According to The Athletic, Cleveland currently only has a 48% chance to make the postseason and a 17% chance to win the division, despite currently sitting in first place with the third seed in the AFC.
Week 8 versus the Steelers changes the odds quite a bit, according to The Athletic. A win in Pittsburgh jumps the visitor’s playoff odds to 67% and their division odds to 29%. A loss changes those numbers drastically: 38% for the postseason, 9% of winning the AFC North.
For the Steelers, the numbers are similar:
Current odds: Playoffs – 58%, Division – 21%
With a Week 8 win: Playoffs – 67%, Division – 28%
With a Week 8 loss: Playoffs – 40%, Division – 9%
For fun, sweeping the AFC North (4 more victories) would run Cleveland’s playoff chances to 99% and division chances to 89%. That would also leave the Browns six other chances to get to double-digit wins.

For now, that fun scenario is putting the cart before the horse. The outcome of Cleveland versus Pittsburgh in Week 8 is big enough on its own.
Are you surprised how big of a swing a Week 8 game can have on playoff odds for both teams? How big of an impact do you think this week’s Browns vs. Steelers game has on the playoffs and AFC North?
