International Notes: I. Mobley, Hayes, Hart, Rwanda
Isaiah Mobley, the older brother of Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley, has signed with Basquet Manresa, the Spanish team announced on Tuesday (via Twitter).
The elder Mobley, who was selected by Cleveland with the 49th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft, appeared in 23 total regular season games for the Cavaliers and Sixers from 2022-25. However, he hasn’t been in the league since his contract with Philadelphia expired at the end of the 2024/25 season. The 6’9″ forward competed overseas last season for Manisa Basket (Turkey) and Hapoel Jerusalem (Israel).
Mobley will be tasked with helping turn things around for a Manresa team off to a slow start in Liga ACB play. Manresa is the only one of 18 teams in the Spanish league that has yet to pick up a win this season — the club is 0-6 in the early going.
We have more updates from around the international basketball world:
- Former NBA lottery pick Killian Hayes recently came close to joining a Maccabi Tel Aviv team seeking backcourt depth, but a deal didn’t ultimately materialize, head coach Oded Kattash said this week, per Nikola Miloradovic of Eurohoops, who relays reporting from Sport5. “We were very close to (signing) Killian Hayes. We agreed to all his conditions, but it didn’t happen. We really wanted him,” Kattash said, per Sport5. “I hope we can bring someone in quickly. We need it.” The Israeli team is looking for an injury replacement at guard with former Sun Gabriel Lundberg out due to a quad injury.
- Knicks forward Josh Hart hinted during a recent conversation with Valeria Rubino of VSport TV (YouTube link; hat tip to Eurohoops) that he may soon take on a formal role with the Italian team Napoli Basket. “This summer, I got a little more active with that organization,” Hart said, adding that he has visited Naples several times. “In time, when things are final, set and done, we’ll talk more about it. I’ll let (team owner and president) Matt (Rizzetta) talk about that. I got love for them, the thing that they’re building there. The team, new arena. There are a lot of big things coming there and I’m excited about it.” Napoli Basket currently competes in the EuroCup but hopes to join the EuroLeague or NBA Europe in the coming years.
- The NBA issued a response to a pair of U.S. senators concerned about the league’s partnership with Rwanda and its dictator Paul Kagame, according to Mark Fainaru-Wada of ESPN, who says deputy commissioner Mark Tatum cited the removal of the military-funded Armée Patriotique Rwandaise team from the Basketball Africa League as evidence that the NBA has altered its approach to its business in the country. “Going forward, we will continue to adjust to changed circumstances as U.S. policy requires,” Tatum wrote in his letter.
