The Baltimore Ravens are evaluating backup quarterback Tyler ‘Snoop’ Huntley for a suspected turf toe injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. An MRI on Monday will shed further light on his status for Thursday night’s matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Huntley, 28, entered Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills after starter Lamar Jackson injured his throwing hand on the first snap of the game. He faced constant pressure and was hit multiple times before leaving the game in the second quarter. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano finished the game under center while taking several shots of his own, though he “hopes” to be ready to play on Thursday.

Jackson is set to land on injured reserve to undergo surgery on his right thumb, which will sideline him for at least four games. Huntley would be in line to start in his place, as he did in Jackson’s three-game absence following a Week 4 high ankle sprain. However, confirmation of his initial turf toe diagnosis will almost certainly keep him from playing in Week 9 – and potentially longer.
Instead, it will likely be Fagnano making an unlikely first start of his NFL career vs. the Jaguars, who boast an elite run defense but have struggled against opposing passers this year. The former UConn starter could only complete 10 of his 21 passing attempts for 91 yards and an interception on Sunday afternoon, good for a paltry 4.3 yards per attempt and a 40.0 quarterback rating. Getting reps with Baltimore’s first-team offense will give him a chance at a better showing against Jacksonville, but Fagnano will clearly be facing an uphill battle.
Huntley largely struggled in his five appearances this year. His numbers through the air are at or above league-average, but his underpowered arm limited the Ravens’ downfield passing game. He was not helped by a leaky, banged-up offense line that slowed the run game and far too often allowed rushers right in his lap.
Turf toe injuries can linger, especially for a quarterback whose game is built on his mobility. Huntley could miss not only Thursday night’s game, but more contests after that, potentially positioning Fagnano for multiple starts. The Ravens will already need to add quarterback depth just to get through the week, but a longer-term absence from Huntley could force them to make a more substantial move.
