The Hornets have gotten off to a 3-4 start to the season despite their starting backcourt being out with injuries, largely thanks to the efforts of Brandon Miller, who has carried the offense early in the season.
They are about to receive some help, especially on the offensive end, as starting point guard Coby White is set to make his season debut on Monday in a game against the Pistons, the team reported (via Twitter).
White was diagnosed with a left calf strain during training camp, which caused him to miss preseason and kept him sidelined for nearly the first two weeks of the season. In his absence, Dennis Schroder has stepped in as the starting point guard and helped keep things running relatively smoothly.
The Hornets re-signed White to a three-year deal this summer after trading LaMelo Ball to the Timberwolves. The team performed well on a limited sample size with White in place of Ball last season, averaging 15.6 points and 3.0 assists in just 19.3 minutes per game after coming over in a trade with the Bulls.
The team is hoping that they can replicate that success this season as they continue to build out the team identity around the core four of White, Miller, Naz Reid, and Kon Knueppel, who has also missed the first two weeks of the season as he deals with a hamstring injury.
Knueppel is still out for Monday’s game, but the sharp-shooting second-year wing is believed to be close to making his season debut. He was recently assigned to the Hornets’ G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, marking an encouraging milestone in his recovery process.
