It’s autumn. The leaves are falling off the trees, and the temperatures are dropping.
Meanwhile, in Daniil Medvedev’s world, things are heating up.
The former world No.1 rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1) victory over Cameron Norrie on Thursday in Vienna, stretching his current winning streak to eight and making it 18 wins from his last 20 matches.
Also of note: Medvedev became the fourth active player on the ATP Tour to reach 100 career quarterfinals. Only Novak Djokovic (228), Marin Cilic (124) and Alexander Zverev (120) have more.
The Russian, who will face Adrian Mannarino in the quarterfinals at the Erste Bank Open, saved a match point along the way, with Norrie serving at 5-3, 40-30 in the deciding set.
Norrie made his first serve, approached the net and found himself a spectator as Medvedev rifled a passing shot down the line to get to deuce.
Medvedev took the next two points to break, then consolidated quickly to level the decider.
After two straight holds, Medvedev powered through the tiebreak, winning the final seven points of the match to book his 51st victory of the 2026 season, against 18 losses.
Medvedev, next in line to clinch his spot in this year’s ATP Finals in Turin, now has 3,760 points and is currently fourth in the race when Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal is taken into account.
In other action in Vienna, second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz edged Nikoloz Basilashvili, the Spaniard winning an 18-minute second-set tiebreak to prevail 6-1, 7-6(11), while seventh-seeded Tommy Paul ripped past Luciano Darderi, 6-1, 6-1.
Paul and Alcaraz will meet in Friday’s quarterfinals.
