Ja Morant is standing by his claim that his fall was warranted.
The Portland Trail Blazers guard said he plans to appeal a $2,000 fine he received for a flopping technical foul at the end of Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Morant’s incident came with just under four minutes left in the 136-129 win. As Lakers guard Austin Reaves drove to the rim, he put his shoulder into Morant’s body, and the Blazers guard put his hands up and appeared off-balance.
Referee Scott Foster let the play finish, then immediately blew his whistle to stop play and call the tech on Morant.
“I just showed my hands and took a bump in my chest,” Morant said to reporters after the game. “It ain’t like I fell. I just kept going backwards. It is what it is. I’ll try to appeal it. I think it’s like a $2,000 (fine).”
When technical fouls are assessed, players are automatically handed a $2,000 fine for initial offences.
Notably, the call on Morant came during a flurry of flopping technical fouls from Foster, as the veteran ref handed out infractions to fellow Blazer Toumani Camara and Laker Ziaire Williams in the final six minutes of Monday’s game.
Asked about the recurring calls after the game, Blazers head coach Micah Nori pointed out how unusual he felt it was to get three infractions when only “27 flops (were) called last year in 2,000 games total (last season).”
“Good job by the NBA,” Nori added. “Point of emphasis. Great job. There were [71] free throws. We almost got past 2 a.m. on the East Coast for the (end of the) game. Sorry to keep you all here so long.”
