The Cavaliers have officially exercised their fourth-year rookie scale team option on Jaylon Tyson’s contract, the team announced today in a press release.
Tyson’s $3.66MM salary for the coming season had already been fully guaranteed. Today’s option decision ensures that his $5.64MM salary for 2027/28, the fourth and final year of his rookie scale contract, has also been locked in.
The 20th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Tyson didn’t play much as a rookie, but he enjoyed a modest breakout year in 2025/26 as he averaged 26.9 minutes per night and started 42 of the 66 regular season games he played for Cleveland. The 23-year-old contributed 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game with a solid shooting line of .493/.446/.738.
Tyson saw his playing time and production fall off in the playoffs. In the team’s three series vs. Toronto, Detroit, and New York, he averaged just 4.1 PPG and 2.8 RPG in 12.7 MPG over the course of 17 appearances off the bench, with a .362/.237/.667 shooting line.
The 6’6″ guard/forward will be looking to bounce back from that underwhelming postseason showing this fall as he plays a key reserve role for a Cavaliers team that lost several depth pieces – including Dean Wade, Dennis Schröder, Keon Ellis, and Max Strus – during the offseason.
Tyson, who was the only Cavalier with a rookie scale team option for 2027/28, is now on track to become eligible for a rookie scale extension in July 2027. He’d reach restricted free agency in July 2028 if he doesn’t sign a new contract next summer.
