International Notes: Neto, L. Walker, Koloko, London Lions
Former NBA guard Raul Neto has signed with the Brisbane Bullets in Australia’s National Basketball League, the team announced in a press release.
A second-round pick in 2013, Neto played in the NBA from 2015-23, appearing in 435 regular season games for four teams during that time. The 34-year-old, who is joining Brisbane as an injury replacement player, stated that he was looking for an opportunity to “compete at a high level” while preparing to represent Brazil in the upcoming FIBA window.
“The NBL is a very competitive league and a new challenge for me,” Neto said. “I’m excited for the opportunity to experience the league, compete against some great players and be part of the Bullets program. I believe in what (head coach) Will Weaver and the Bullets are building, and I’m looking forward to being part of the program and competing with this group.”
Here are a few more notes from around the international basketball world:
- After being cut by Denver on Monday, Lonnie Walker IV is drawing overseas interest, reports Aris Barkas of Eurohoops. According to Barkas, the Turkish club Besiktas is one of at least three EuroLeague teams eyeing the seven-year NBA veteran. Walker has previously played for Zalgiris Kaunas and Maccabi Tel Aviv and recently signed with agent Misko Raznatovic, signaling that he’s preparing to head back to Europe for the coming season.
- Big man Christian Koloko, waived on Friday by the Pelicans, is believed to be drawing interest from the Spanish team Baskonia, per a report from El Correo (hat tip to BasketNews.com). Baskonia has been seeking frontcourt help after losing Khalifa Diop to the Cavaliers and parting ways with Alex Len. Koloko, who played for three teams last season, has made 122 total appearances since entering the NBA as a 2022 second-round pick. He’s no longer eligible for a two-way contract and had been in camp with New Orleans on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 deal.
- Eduardo Tansley of The Athletic talked to members of the London Lions as they prepared for Monday’s exhibition game against the Trail Blazers. They became the first British basketball club ever to face an NBA team, losing by a 119-66 margin. The Lions’ roster includes Maxwell Lewis, who played 62 combined games with the Lakers and Nets, and Tarik Phillip, who spent the 2018/19 season with the Grizzlies’ G League affiliate before heading overseas.
