ATP Masters 1000 tournaments have evoked extremes in Ben Shelton this season.
Today, talented 21-year-old Arthur Gea showed Shelton the door in Shanghai.
The 56th-ranked Frenchman squeezed out a 7-6(5), 7-6(3) win over Shelton to reach the round of 16 at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
Shelton fell to 8-6 in ATP Masters 1000 tournaments this season with six of his eight wins coming in Montreal where he successfully defended his Canadian Open championship. Shelton, who smacked seven aces, said finishing points was a challenge in part because of the heavy balls.
“Yeah, the courts were definitely a lot faster. Still, this ball is one of the slowest and heaviest balls, the slowest and heaviest ball that we use on tour,” Shelton said. “But they sped up the courts significantly.”
This match popped with flashes of attacking tennis—Shelton won 21 of 26 net points and Gea was 20 of 28 in the frontcourt—with the Shanghai debutant delivering sharper play in both tie breaks.

US Open finalist Shelton said Gea’s superior play combined with nagging jet leg were too much to overcome.
“I got outplayed today. The guy played better than me,” Shelton told the media in Shanghai. “A hundred percent, I would have liked to have come over here earlier and be prepared and have already dealt with the jet lag by the time I was playing here in the Shanghai Masters.
“My body wasn’t ready. I wasn’t physically ready to play in Tokyo. That’s just the way this tour is sometimes.”
It was Gea’s first Top 10 win and his 12th win in his last 14 Tour-level matches since July, including a run to his maiden ATP title in Los Cabos. Gea will face 2025 Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik for a quarterfinal spot. The 13th-seeded Mensik defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
“I have watched some of him playing. He’s a very talented player,” Shelton said of Gea. “I thought he played an outstanding, complete match today. He’s got a huge forehand and big game and, yeah, I think that he’ll do very well on Tour.”
Shelton, who has won four titles this season, could have clinched his spot in the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin with a win today, but remains on track for Turin return.
“I want to finish on a high note in Turin,” Shelton said. “Obviously I want to be prepared, playing some of my best tennis when I get there.
“Three tournaments left to finish the year, which has been a very up and down year, but a great year, on a high note.”
