After opening the 2026 season with a dominating win over the Tennessee Titans last week, this week the New York Jets fell back down to earth with a resounding thud. The Jets dominated the Green Bay Packers for most of the game. They led by double digits early in the fourth quarter, before imploding and letting the game slip away in overtime. Poor coaching, questionable decisions, dumb penalties, a key breakdown on special teams, terrible clock management, a nonexistent running game, poor quarterback play and an offensive line that did not live up to its billing all contributed to the disappointing 20 – 17 Jets overtime loss to the Packers.
The Jets dominated the Packers on paper. They outgained the Packers on the ground and through the air. They controlled the clock with an overwhelming 37:40 to 26:57 advantage in time of possession. They converted 42% on third down compared to a miniscule 11% for the Packers. They won the turnover battle, 1 to 0. Despite all this, the Jets somehow managed to blow a double digit fourth quarter lead and lose as the Packers closed the game with 13 unanswered points.

The loss gave the Jets a 1-1 record to start the season. Now the Jets go on the road to take on the Detroit Lions next Sunday. Like the Jets, the Lions won their first game and lost their second this season. They have excelled on offense, scoring 31 points each game, while struggling mightily on defense, giving up 30+ points each game. The Jets should have some success on offense against a Lions team that has given up 30+ points and 446+ yards in each of their first two games. On defense, this game should present a serious challenge for a Jets defense that has been dominant for the most part over the first two games, ranking 2nd in the NFL to date in both points and yards allowed. The Lions’ explosive offense may be difficult to contain.
