The Bulls have officially put out a press release announcing Tiago Splitter’s coaching staff ahead of his first year on the job. The group includes newly retired big man Taj Gibson, whose role as an assistant coach in Chicago was reported earlier in the day.
Notably, Wes Unseld Jr., who was a Bulls assistant for the past two seasons under Billy Donovan and interviewed for the team’s head coaching vacancy this spring, is returning for a third season in Chicago and will be part of Splitter’s staff. A veteran assistant who has worked for NBA teams for the past two-plus decades, Unseld was the Wizards’ head coach from 2021-24.
While Unseld is the only Bulls assistant with previous head coaching experience, Splitter’s staff features several experienced coaches, including Rex Kalamian, Jamelle McMillan, Jonah Herscu, and Blake Ahearn.
Kalamian has worked for eight different teams since 1995 and was most recently on Milwaukee’s staff under Doc Rivers. McMillan, the son of Nate McMillan, spent the past three years coaching the Motor City Cruise, the Pistons’ G League affiliate, following stints as an assistant with the Hawks, Pelicans, and Suns.
Herscu, a former Lakers and Kings assistant, was in Portland with Splitter as an assistant and also coached the Rip City Remix in the G League last season. Ahearn, a former NBA guard, coached the Spurs’ G League team from 2017-20 and was a Grizzlies assistant under Taylor Jenkins from 2020-24.
One other notable addition to the Bulls’ staff is former Knicks assistant Jordan Brink, who will also hold the title of director of player development. As we noted when Brink’s move from New York to Chicago was first reported last month, he was largely responsible for initiating the Knicks’ coaches challenges and was credited for the team’s league-best success rate on challenges during the 2024/25 season.
