NEW YORK—The New York Mets lost the Polar Bear in the offseason.
Now, New York’s beloved baseball underdogs are supporting Meddy Bear at the US Open.
The Mets, who inexplicably failed to sign home-grown slugger Pete “Polar Bear” Alonso during the offseason losing him to the Orioles, play at Citi Field directly across the street from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center home of the US Open.
The Amazing Mets sent a baseball care package to Daniil Medvedev after he asked for chewing gum during his 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 US opening-round win over Frenchman Hugo Gaston.
During the victory Medvedev, who has become a baseball fan, requested chewing gum because he had dry mouth and has seen baseball players chew gum during MLB games.
The cellar-dwelling Mets, whose 62-76 record is second-worst in the National League, made their second-best move of the season (after promoting rookie Carson Benge to the squad out of spring training) showing support for the 2021 US Open champion. The Mets package included bubble gum, a Mets cap and a legendary Mr. Met bobblehead doll.
Medvedev seemed most impressed with the giant tub of bubble gum the team sent as well as an iconic Mr. Met bobblehead.
Will we see Meddy take the mound at Citi Field as tennis legends John McEnroe, Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters have done in the past and toss the ceremonial first pitch before a Mets home game?
If you bleed blue-and-orange we can always hope, right?
The challenge is Medvedev has already declared himself a Cincinnati Reds fan and threw out the first pitch before a Reds game last month.
Even if the Mets can’t recruit Meddy Bear, the Flushing Meadows faithful can still celebrate the mutual support between the Amazings and the US Open.
The Mets are hosting a Mrs. Met tennis bobblehead giveaway promotion on Saturday, September 5th.
The first 18,000 fans through the Citi Field gates will receive Mrs. Met bobblehead showing the Hall of Fame mascot ready to serve.
