Marvin Lewis shares insight on Mike Brown and Bengals ownership

As a small-market team, the Cincinnati Bengals have always been a franchise the national media picks on and spins narratives about each and every year.

The front office has built a reputation over the past several decades but has slowly changed its ‘ways’ to help build a successful team around Joe Burrow.

The Bengals extended Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins, something every media outlet claimed would never happen.

The Bengals traded their first-round pick for superstar defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, something the franchise has never done and everyone assumed would never happen.

The Bengals have invested in the offensive line and have all five starters from last season returning to protect Burrow, something the media gripes on every single day.

The Bengals spent roughly $125 million on defensive free agents to help bolster a defense that needed serious help, yet the media says the front office doesn’t spend money.

The bottom line is the Bengals front office has changed their ways right in front of our eyes, and former head coach Marvin Lewis shared some interesting insight this week on how the front office operates, specifically Mike Brown.

“Let’s talk about the Brown family,” Lewis said in an appearance on the Inside Football podcast. “Mike Brown doesn’t give a shit about money. Don’t waste it. All his money goes to that football team. The man has no outside habits other than reading big ass thick books that I used to just look at on his desk or beside me on the plane. He just wants to win football games the way he wants to win.”

Lewis continued, “He doesn’t want to mortgage the franchise on one year and one player. He sees a 3 or 4 year projection and that is different than how some organizations work.”

The former head coach went on to give examples of free agents the Bengals front office lost, and that forced them to pivot and figure out another option.

He also shared his thoughts on Burrow being the voice for ownership… What Burrow wants, ownership wants to make happen.

“I am telling ya, his (Burrow’s) words trigger action, ain’t no question in my mind because that man (Mike Brown) loves quarterbacks and wants to win in the worst way,” Lewis stated.

It is neat to hear this perspective from Lewis because he was in the Bengals building every day for years and years.
