The lightning delay was announced by referee Bill Vinovich less than two minutes after the start of the game. A heavy rain had been falling in the contest’s opening minutes, and a nearby lightning strike necessitated a delay.
Neither the NFL nor the Browns provided an immediate update about when the preseason contest would resume.
A light rain was falling at the start of the Browns vs. Bills came, but it quickly increased in intensity. The Browns and Bills only got four plays off before a nearby lightning strike, along with the heavy rain, caused the game to be delayed.
The lightning delay comes as there is a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake counties, according to Fox 8 News. The warning is in effect until 1:45 p.m. ET.
