The New York Giants had a real scare in their joint practice with the Miami Dolphins as rookie guard Francis Mauigoa left the field and went inside with a trainer.
Those on the scene down in Miami report that Mauigoa went inside without his helmet or pads, raising concerns that he might have a real injury.
We didn’t hear much over the next half-hour or so, until Jordan Raanan of ESPN reported that the issue with Mauigoa doesn’t seem to be serious. He adds that Mauigoa is believed to have a “heat-related issue”.
Dolphins wide receiver A.J. Henning also went inside with a trainer shortly after Mauigoa.
There’s currently a heat advisory in effect for Miami, with the temperature at 91 degrees and the heat index at 103 thanks to humidity. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all if the teams’ training staffs are being particularly careful to avoid dehydration on a steamy day in the southeast. Not only does dehydration pose its own risks, it makes other injuries more likely.
Mauigoa did return to the field for the end of practice, though he was accompanied by a trainer.
For now, we’re waiting for an official update from head coach John Harbaugh after practice.
