The Hornets are hiring John Bryant as an assistant coach, reports Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (via Twitter).
Bryant was an assistant on Billy Donovan‘s staff in Chicago for the past five years. Donovan stepped down as head coach of the Bulls in April, after the 2025/26 season ended.
Bryant, a former professional player, got his coaching start in the G League, spending three seasons with the Bakersfield Jam and two with the Delaware Blue Coats from 2011-2016. He became a player development coach with the Sixers in 2016 and was promoted to an assistant in 2018 before joining Chicago in 2021.
Here are a couple more updates on coaches landing new positions:
- According to Scotto (Twitter link), the Nuggets plan to hire Austin Dufault, who will hold dual titles of assistant coach and vice president of player development. Dufault, who played college basketball for the University of Colorado, was most recently Chicago’s director of player development. He also spent two seasons (2021-23) as an assistant coach with the Pistons under former head coach Dwane Casey.
- Ken Nakagawa is leaving his job as an assistant with the University of Arizona to join the Salt Lake City Stars — the Jazz‘s G League affiliate — as an assistant coach, he confirms to Bruce Pascoe of Tuscon.com. As Pascoe writes, Nakagawa worked closely with former Wildcat Bennedict Mathurin during the 2021/22 campaign and helped Motiejus Krivas make a significant leap last season. Krivas was considered a possible 2026 first-round pick before the Lithuanian center opted to return to Arizona for his senior year. Nakagawa aspires to become an NBA coach one day. “All those guys (in the NBA) I have relationships with, they’re always like ‘Hey, you could do it at this level, too,’” Nakagawa said. “That definitely built my curiosity. I wouldn’t say this is a perfect time, but I just felt like this was a good time to do it.”
