Although head coach Darko Rajakovic and several of his assistants received four-year contract extensions earlier in the offseason, the Raptors‘ staff will be undergoing a few changes this offseason, according to Michael Grange of Sportsnet.ca, who reports that the team is expected to hire Stephen Silas as an assistant coach.
The son of former NBA coach Paul Silas, Stephen has extensive experience as an assistant, having been part of coaching staffs in Charlotte, New Orleans, Cleveland, Golden State, and Dallas for two decades beginning in 2000 before being hired as the Rockets’ head coach in 2020.
Unfortunately, Silas’ stint in Houston didn’t play out as hoped, as Russell Westbrook and James Harden were traded within the first few months of his tenure and the organization launched a full-fledged rebuild that lasted for several years. During his three seasons with the Rockets, the team posted a dismal record of 59-177 (.250).
Silas’ next NBA job didn’t go much better, as he spent a single season under Monty Williams with the 14-win Pistons in 2023/24. He has been out of the league since then, having focused for the past couple years on coaching Team USA during AmeriCup qualifying games, the 2025 AmeriCup tournament itself, and qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup.
According to Grange, former Raptors assistants Mike Batiste and James Wade won’t be returning to Toronto under Rajakovic next season. Batiste has accepted a lead assistant role with Panathinaikos in Greece, Grange notes.
