While highly-touted rookie cornerback Jermod McCoy has not been on the practice field lately, the Las Vegas Raiders expect that to change when the team returns from a summer break.
Speaking to the media for the alst time before training camp starts late next month, new Las Vegas head coach Klint Kubiak said Thursday that he expects McCoy to practice in training camp without going into a specific plan.

“It going to be moving target with him … but we drafted him to play,“ Kubiak said.
McCoy was not on the field during the Raiders’ two mandatory minicamp practices this week. He missed the last two OTA sessions attended by media members as well. He had been previously doing some things on the practice field. Kubiak said this processs is all part of the Raiders’ medical team’s plan for McCoy..
The Raiders traded up from No. 102 to No. 101 in a trade with the Buffalo Bills. The Raiders sent a seventh-round pick in 2027 to complete the trade to draft McCoy who tumbled in the draft due to health concerns.
McCoy was considered a top-1o talent and could become a true No.1 cornerback for a team that needs the help. He missed all of last season with a torn ACL. But there are deeper issues. McCoy reportedly had a degenerative knee issue and he may need to have a surgery that could keep him out for a year. Reportedly, there are also risk that if the surgery doesn’t work he could never play.

Reportedly, there are concerns that he may have a short career at best. Also, reportedly, there were many teams that had McCoy off their draft board because of the injury concerns. ESPN reported this week that five of eight teams polled after Round 3 said he was off their draft boards due to the health worries. That tracks to be more than half the league.
Still, the Raiders are hopeful McCoy will be fine and that plan remains in tact.
Meanwhile, like assistant head coach Mike McCoy said Tuesday, Kubiak said there is no concerns about the status of new linebacker Nakobe Dean without going into specifics. He hasn’t been practicing in the offseason, but he ahs been working at the building. Dean signed a three-year, $36 million contract with the Raiders with $20 million in guaranteed money in March.

Kubiak said the Raiders are an improved team, but he wants to see continued progress in training camp.
Kubiak said his message to the team as it broke for vacation that they needed to continue to work on their conditioning. He said an entire offseason work could be ruined in the players spend their summer on the couch.
